Advertising has always about placing ads on popular media outlets. Someone needs to create something that draws attention and someone needs to create the ads.

Producing content looks like television, radio, and websites. People come for the shows, music, or articles but are forced to see or hear ads.

Someone needed to create the ads your seeing on television, radio, and websites. Most of the time, the ads you see are not created by the company with the product. Often, advertising agencies will make money advertising for companies by setting up their ads.

How do advertisers make money online?

There are four main ways advertisers make money online. An advertiser can use display ads, affiliate marketing, selling digital or physical products, and advertising for companies. Each method have their pros and cons, but all are proven ways to make money advertising online.

Let’s take a look at each of the four different ways you can earn money advertising.

Display ads

Display ads are one of my favorite ways to make money online. Ad networks provide you a snippet of code. You can take that snippet and paste it on your website. You get paid whenever someone views or clicks an ad.

To get started, you’re going to need a website or YouTube account. Note that starting a YouTube account will limit your options to using only Google Adsense.

Next, you’re going to want to create content. A blogger needs to create articles so people can find their website. The more content a blogger has, the higher chances someone will find an article and see an ad. Higher website traffic will result in higher ad revenue.

Generally, display ads allow you to earn between $12 and $25 per thousand views. So a blog that gets 100,000 pageviews per month most likely earns between $1,200 and $2,500 in ad revenue.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing allows you to earn a commission for referring business. You can sign up for an affiliate program and you’ll receive a unique link. Share your link with possible customers and earn money when a purchase is made through your link.

For example, maybe you found a product that retails for $100 online. The company offers a 20% commission for anyone who makes a sale. You get 10 people to buy that $100 product for $1,000 in gross sales and earn $200 in commissions.

ShareASale is a huge network of companies looking for people to promote their products. You can browse a list of companies and apply to join each merchant’s affiliate program.

The company will review your application to join. Approval is up to each company, but there are thousands of companies to choose from. Most companies are looking to see if you have an established website that works with their brand.

Selling digital courses or physical products

Selling digital courses or physical products is one of the best ways you can make money advertising. Similar to selling affiliate products, but you get to keep 100% of the profits. If you own the product, you can even have other marketers sell your product in exchange for a commission.

Imagine, having an army of marketers selling your product!

It’s easier to market your own product than someone else’s. Imagine, two products both selling for $100. One product is yours and the other is someone who offers you a 50% commission. You’re putting in the same amount of work and money to advertise.

The affiliate product only makes you $10 if you spend $40 in advertising to make one sale. However, spend the same $40 on advertising on your own product and earn $60!

Physical products tend to be easier to sell than digital courses. With a physical product, you’re receiving something physical for your money.

Digital courses tend to be a bit trickier to sell. Most people don’t know what they are going to get. A lot of people want something they can hold if they’re going to spend money.

Courses based on self improvement can be hard to sell. Often, people don’t realize they need self improvement in areas of their life. Something needs to prod them into taking action.

Advertising for companies

Advertising for companies is one of the quickest ways to make money. However, creating an advertising company still requires a lot of hard work.

Simply put, you are providing an advertising service that helps companies get clients. You are responsible for finding companies who need help advertising. Show them that you can help them set up advertisements on their behalf.

What you charge for posting ads for companies is completely up to you and the company. Remember, it has to be a good deal for you and them!

Imagine, finding 10 clients that you can charge $1,000 per month. You now bring in $10,000 in advertising income before expenses. Obviously, some of this income will go towards paying freelancers and setting up ads.

How much money do you make in advertising?

Your earning potential is uncapped if you start your own advertising agency or blog. Simply put, the sky is the limit when it comes to making money as an online marketer.

Ok, so let’s take a look at how much you can make as an advertiser.

As you can see, starting your own advertising company can earn you a full time income. Starting your own advertising or content marketing company is something you can do in your spare time.

Most people start their companies as a side hustle while working a 9-5. With consistent effort, they are able to turn their side hustle into their main income source.

Keep in mind, the bloggers mentioned here have been blogging for a long time. They are able to make that much money because they started, learned from their mistakes, and kept at it.

A person who is successful in advertising learns from their mistakes and never gives up. You should consistently be working towards building an advertising business and learning new things. You won’t have a problem being successful if you can keep an open mind, learn, and show up daily.

In my 3+ years of blogging, the biggest things that have led to success is consistent action and learning. Let’s take a look at how you can be successful in adverting.

Learn from your mistakes and be consistent

Most internet marketers don’t earn anything from their side hustle. However, it’s not from a lack of trying or wanting to make money. Rather, most people don’t know how to build an online business from the ground up.

Because of this, most people are focusing on tactics that don’t work. You spend so much time going down the wrong path before you try something different. It’s a huge rookie mistake!

I’m guilty of spending too much time on things that don’t work myself. I spent an entire year trying to tweak my Pinterest account for more blog traffic with no luck. Unfortunately, I was listening too much to other blogger’s advice that wasn’t working.

What’s important is that you learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward. Eventually, I learned the secret to success in blogging was producing the right content on a consistent basis.

Also, don’t expect your results to be immediate. Results tend to grow in an exponential manner. Despite your hard work, you’re not going to see much results in the beginning.

Learning has been a huge advantage in growing a website. I’m always reading websites, watching YouTube, or looking for a new course to buy.

I don’t always find anything new or life changing. However, every now and then, I find a piece of information that is a gold mine! Maybe I find a helpful website one day or a new strategy the next.

Most of the information that you need to be successful in advertising is available free online. However, it is usually buried and hard to find. Therefore, buying a course on a particular subject is the greatest shortcut.

A course allows you to find all the information you need in one location. You’re learning from someone who’s already struggled and found a way to make something work. However, sometimes you learn the most from struggling yourself.
