What are the best products to sell from home?

The best products to sell from home have a low cost of creation with high profit margins. People feel more comfortable buying physical products, but digital products can sell well. Ideally, your product sells large quantities and produces repeat business.

As you come up with a list of products, keep the following in mind. Selling from home doesn’t have to be difficult, but the following factors are common traits for successful products.

Digital products or courses

Digital products and courses aim to sell helpful information to alleviate someone’s problem. The low cost and high selling point will typically lead to high profit margins. Selling digital products allows you to create a business anywhere you have a laptop and an internet connection.

Everyone has a problem they are looking to solve. The best digital products solve someone’s problem such as making more money, losing weight, or learning a skill.

A digital product can be a simple PDF or series of videos. It doesn’t cost much to set up a point-of-sale system online. Once the product is created, you can sell the product over and over for 100% profit.

Most people get into selling digital products because of the location freedom. You have no physical inventory, so you’re not tied to any one location. Therefore, you can continue to sell even if you are on the beach of Hawaii.

Unfortunately, many people can be skeptical about buying a digital product. Therefore, you usually have to build trust with an audience to make sales. Alternatively, you can get an army of marketers to sell your product for you if you pay them a commission.

Physical items

Physical items can make a large amount of money, but often requires a lot of work. Not only do you have to find out how to make the product, but sell it as well. You can make the products yourself, find a manufacturer, or do private label.

Some people choose to make homemade products themselves. An example would be someone who makes candles and sells them on Etsy.

Making homemade products for sale can be difficult because you need time to make and then sell products. Most of us can’t even find 5 minutes of quiet time. Your attention will be split between making products and trying to market them.

Therefore, a lot of people find manufacturers or higher people to make their product. Doing so will require upfront cash for Manufacturing Services or hiring your own employees.

A third option is private label. Private label allows you to slap your own branding on a product made by someone else. The main problem is that other people are selling the same product but the label is different.

One of the most common examples in the industry is supplements. a manufacturer might make a generic protein powder. Anyone can sell this protein powder under their own name. Most customers don’t recognize the product by anything other than the label.

Some private label companies will fulfill orders for you. In other words, when you make a sale on your own website they will ship the product to the customer.

Products you flip for profit

You can make money flipping products for profit. Find discounted products in stores, yard sales, bazaars, and more to sell online. You can make a lot of money finding someone’s old junk and selling it online.

Everyday, people are selling on Amazon, eBay, mercari, Poshmark, and every other online business. A lot of what people are buying are what resellers found for cheap somewhere else.

Most of these apps have a barcode scanner. Therefore, when you are out doing your grocery shopping you can check the profitability of items you come across.

The major benefit is online retailers like Amazon and eBay get millions of visits per day. Everyone that visits these stores are ready to shop. Therefore, you can focus on finding and listing products for sale from the comfort of your own home.

Amazon also has the Fulfillment by Amazon service or FBA. FBA allows you to send your products into Amazon. When someone makes a purchase on Amazon, the product is shipped out for you.

When you’re selling on eBay mercari, you’ll have to ship out your own products. You could find a warehouse to ship your products for you, but that cost money.

Products with sales volume

You want to find products that aren’t sitting on the shelf. You are making money when you are making sales. Therefore, you want to find products which have sales volume.

Your dream business is one where you can’t keep the products stock on the shelf. Therefore, we need to do some research on how quickly a product moves. Is this product going to make 13 sales per month or 3,000 sales per month?

By looking at your competitors ahead of time you can save yourself a lot of hassle and money. If the rest of your competitors are selling a product with low sales then there isn’t a demand for the product. Therefore, it may be best to look at other products to sell from home.

Products with repeat buys

Consumable products are one of the best products you can sell. If people like your product and they run out, they will want more. you can make more money if you can sell a product again and again to the same customers.

Imagine, trying to sell two different products from home. The first product is a water bottle and second are dog treats.

Most people only need one water bottle. Maybe two if they want to rotate. I’m not going to go back every month and buy a new water bottle.

However, I have two dogs and they both like tasty snacks. They will use their beady little eyes to pierce my soul as if to say, “get me a snack, hooman!” Therefore, I need to buy treats almost every month.

Creating a consumable product is the ideal choice. Additionally, you can build brand loyalty by getting someone hooked on your product.

Companies like Amazon help you do  this with a subscribe and save feature. You can add a subscribe and save button to your Amazon store which gives a discount for selecting repeat purchases.

How do I know which products are in high demand?

To find which products are in high demand, compare other products, take pre-orders, and consult trends. Comparing other people’s products proves a market demand for the product. Your pre-orders prove you can sell a product with low risk. Consulting trends identifies seasonality or a decline in demand.

Look at other products price and sales history

The first step is to compare product price and sales history. Evaluating price and sales history gives you an idea at what price and how many sales your competitor’s product is making. Therefore, you should keep these numbers in mind for evaluating your profitability.

You can use a price and sales history tracking tool such as Keepa. Keepa shows you the price and how many times an item was sold on Amazon.

Keepa on Amazon

What is the price which tends to generate the most amount of sales? Can you bring a product to market which can compete at that price level?

How many sales is the item making? Too few sales and your product will not sell due to low market demand. Too many sales in the market may prove very competitive.

Take preorders

Pre-orders are a good way to estimate how many customers you can bring in for a given product. You can evaluate a product’s success and profitability without creating the product. Once the idea is confirmed, then create a product and sell to your pre-order list.

For example, you can run Facebook ads to a landing page which sells your product. However, at this time you are only taking pre-orders. You can spend very little ad spend to see how many pre-orders were successful.

Nothing is guaranteed until money is exchanged. Most people say they want something, but then back out when they have to put money on the line. Therefore, it is best to ask for credit card information even if they are not charged.

If the idea was not profitable, then all you are out is time and what little ad spend. You did not waste a lot of money creating a product that no one wanted.

If the idea was profitable, go for it! You have proven that you can make sales and generate a profit.

Consult Trends

Trends are a good way of evaluating the popularity of items over time. Unfortunately, not every single product will remain a good seller and some items experience seasonality. Therefore, you need to understand when your product will be successful.

One of the best places to evaluate trends is Google Trends. Google Trends evaluates the search history of certain phrases over time.

For example, let’s look at the popularity of peppermint tea. Maybe I want to start a tea business but starting with one product.

Peppermint Tea Google Trends

As you can see, peppermint tea is popular in the winter time.

However, this is just showing me how frequently peppermint tea is searched. A score of 100 indicates the most amount of search volume the term reached. Therefore, it may be a good idea  to compare peppermint to other teas and see how they compare in search volume.

I will now add green and black tea and compare the search volume.

Multiple Tea Google Trends

As you can see, green tea is the most frequently searched. Peppermint tea is nowhere as popular as green tea. Therefore, I may want to consider starting with green tea instead of peppermint.

All teas search popularity tend to spike in the winter time. Therefore, I should expect sales to be much better in the winter time and fall off during the summer months.

Distribution vs Manufacturing

When starting to sell products from home it’s easy to get caught up in the details. You need to focus either creating a distribution channel or becoming a manufacturer of goods. Do you want to create the products yourself or learn how to sell other people’s products?

Making products to sell online

As previously mentioned, you can make products yourself but someone else needs to sell them. You can have Affiliates sell your product for a commission or use major marketplaces like Amazon.

Don’t try and reinvent the wheel when it comes to making a product. The best products you can sell are one people are already using. You just need to claim your share of the marketplace.

To do that, find what is already selling and create your take. Can you make a product just a little bit better?

Creating distribution to sell other companies products

Distribution is the process of building a platform to sell products to customers. You can use social media, blogging, or online retailers to sell products. Once you have a distribution channel in place, find products to sell.

Some distribution channels take more work than others. Selling on Amazon already has a lot of customers. However, you will need to constantly find products to sell.

Creating a blog or social media account takes time to build. However, once built you can sell products over and over again.

How to sell products from home

Start selling products from home by determining if you want to manufacture or distribute products. focus on one sales method and build your inventory. Start selling your products and outsource any tasks that help your business grow.

Determine if you want distribution or manufacturing

It’s time to decide. Do you want to create your own products or do you want to distribute other people’s products? You will probably fail if you try and do both.

Focus on one platform

Most business owners fail because they try to be everywhere at once. You need to focus on one sales platform and own it. Build your blog, Twitter account, or Amazon store one at a time.

Get inventory or products

You cannot make any money if you have nothing to sell. Identify products you want to sell or build up your inventory. The more products you have to sell the more chances of making a sale. Try to go wide in your product offerings (different products) over stocking a single product.

Start selling

You need to nail down how you are going to start selling products. Figure out your sales system, what works and what doesn’t work. Spend your time doing the things that work and repeat.

Outsource tasks as needed

You cannot run your business by yourself. In order to grow, you will need to outsource certain tasks. Ideally, you are outsourcing the tasks you do not find fun so you can focus on what you enjoy.

People often outsource bookkeeping, content creation, ad management, and many other tasks. What tasks in your industry would free up a lot of time as someone else did it?

One common mistake is not hiring a person to do one task well. Many people make the mistake of hiring people to do multiple tasks. However, usually it is best to let one person do one thing and do it well.

What can I sell to make money fast?

To make money fast, find an existing product that already sells well. Put that product on a marketplace that is already selling like hotcakes. Success comes  from finding great products and putting them in front of buyers.

For example, I found a name brand dog treat that was selling extremely well on Amazon. I could not keep my inventory stocked on Amazon because it’s sold crazy fast. It was a good product that already had a customer base.

Too many people I think they need to come up with the next best thing. However, there are many products out there already that sell well. You don’t need your own product. You just need to buy low and sell high.
