Are you a hobbyist gardener looking to make some green!? It’s time to turn your passion for gardening into cash!
Gardening is a good way for anyone with some extra space to make some money. The best part about gardening for money is that it can require little investment to get started.
There is a large community of people who would rather buy their produce local than from a store. It’s hard to trust what you get at the store these days in a world full of scientifically messed with GMO crops.
Ready to get started? Let’s get growin’!

Choosing Your Growing Area
So you are going to need an area to grow your plants in. I know this might sound surprising, but plants do require a certain amount of real estate!
To get started, you’ll want to figure out what you are going to grow. Herbs tend to take up less space than say pumpkins or corn. Starting small is always best! Growing too much too fast tends to overwhelm first-time gardeners.
Growing your plants outside is the most common method, but some people choose to grow their gardens inside using light from windows or grow lights. Both have their pros and cons, but you will want to grow outside if you want to expand your gardening business because inside space will get limited!
Seed to Crop
The best part about gardening for profit is the small start up cost. Starting your garden from seeds rather than starter pods or plants is an excellent way to keep costs low!
Choose organic and non-GMO seeds as they are a huge selling point for people these days. If you can avoid using pesticides then even better! People will pay more just to know they are consuming organic, non-GMO, and pesticide free food!
Once you plant your seeds, you can start seeing results in as little as two weeks. Watch some videos online on how to harvest seeds from your crops, so you don’t have to re-buy seeds. Get excited because it’s almost time to make some money!
Sell Produce at Farmers Market
I would highly recommend getting a spot at your local farmers market if you can. This is an excellent way to sell your produce because people come to you ready to buy, rather than you having to seek buyers out.
If you want to sell your produce, consider creating a few of your favorite recipes for people to take. Chances are if they see a recipe they want to try and you sell all the ingredients then you might just make a few sales!
Sell Produce/Plants Locally Online
Post an ad online through sites like Craigslist advertising the produce you are selling. Include a little information about your small operation to help build some people’s trust.
Facebook groups and pages filled with people around your community are another great way of getting customers to buy your produce. Some people may be more interested in buying plants from you rather than just produce.
Create your own Facebook page for people to follow. This is an excellent way to reach your customers year after year and when new produce becomes available. Repeat business is an amazing thing!Sharing is Caring!Click To Tweet
Herbs are perfect for people just starting out. Herbs are great sellers because people absolutely love them! Have you ever tried fresh basil right off the plant? It’s amazingly delicious.
The best part for you is that herbs don’t take up a lot of space and they grow fast! This means you can do more volume with less space.
Sell Mixes/Package Deals
Looking to stand out from the rest? Here are a few ideas for you.
- Create and sell salad mixes. People love fresh garden salads for lunches or dinners.
- Create and sell herb kits. If you are growing a few different herb types, consider bundling a few of them together to give your customers some variety.
- Create and sell tea kits. Take your herbs like peppermint and buy some tea bags online to make your own tea. Who doesn’t love tea?!
