Ad revenue is determined based on the content you write, your ad network, and your targeted audience. Write more content with buyer keywords which targets an American audience. Partner with premium ad networks and avoid discussing controversial topics which may scare away advertisers.
Premium ad networks
The easiest way to increase your ad revenue is by partnering with a premium ad network. A premium ad network will be able to offer you better RPMs for your existing content. Most website owners see an increase in earnings when they partner with an exclusive network.
For example, most bloggers might see an increase in earnings by switching from Google Adsense to Ezoic. The ad networks are monetizing the same content, but Ezoic is able to optimize your ad setup better. Ezoic may also be able to share more of the ad revenue than Adsense.
More content
Simply writing more content is going to get more ad revenue. Your pageviews should increase with more content you have. Taking your pageviews from 10k per month to 20k would double your revenue while maintaining the same RPM.
Create content targeted towards buyers
Look at the type of content you’re creating. Are you creating content which targets individuals with disposable income?
Think about creating content geared towards people with homes or a specific hobby. People who have hobbies tend to spend money on those hobbies. Ad bids are more costly where people are spending money.
Ad networks like Ezoic have a tool to analyze your top performing pages for ad revenue. You can see what content is performing and create similar content.
Competitive buyer keywords
Advertisers make a list of keywords they want to bid on. More money needs to be spent on advertising for competitive keywords, otherwise the ad won’t be shown.
For example, Protein Powder is an extremely competitive keyword for advertisers. Thousands of people are searching for the best protein powder. Advertisers need to spend a lot of money otherwise someone else’s advertisement will be shown instead.
Make sure to include competitive keywords in your content, but don’t stuff keywords. Just add a few competitive keywords to increase your RPMs.
Avoid Controversial topics
Advertisers don’t want to spend money on websites with controversial topics. Instead, advertisers want to spend money on family friendly content. No advertiser wants to spend money on websites where the publisher talks negatively about their product or industry.
Focus on U.S. markets
Compared to every other country, advertising is the most competitive in the United States. Advertisers are spending top dollar to advertise to an American audience. Therefore, make sure your content is relevant to Americans!
For example, the cost per click is 13% less in the UK than it is in the U.S. Canada is 29% less, Germany is 31%, and India is 77% less than the United States!
Can you really make money with Google Adsense?
You can make money from Google Adsense, but you can make more money using a premium ad network. Most publishers don’t see much ad income before 10,000 monthly pageviews. At 10,000 pageviews, you’re eligible to join a premium ad network with higher RPMs.
Adsense tends to be one of the lowest paying ad networks. Your best strategy is to apply to Adsense, but not use it. Premium ad networks which are a Google Certified Publishing Partner will want to see that you’re in good standing with Adsense.
In addition, Google doesn’t provide any support for Adsense publishers. You’re left in the dark should your account run into any issues. Therefore, you’re taking a risk of not being able to join a premium ad network later should something happen to your Adsense account.
Your reputation with Google is important and your earnings will be limited with Adsense. Therefore, I recommend skipping Adsense until you reach a premium ad network. You can typically link your Adsense account with premium ad networks if you still want to use it.
Are blog ads the only way to monetize?
Blogs are not limited to ad revenue for monetization. Monetization can also be done through affiliate marketing, selling digital products, and sponsored posts. However, blog ads are one of the most passive forms of making money.
Affiliate marketing involves selling someone else’s product. You are rewarded with a commission in exchange for making a sale.
Sponsored posts involve writing an article which advertises a product. The company pays you directly for an article or review of their product. Some publishers offer to advertise their sponsored post through Facebook advertising.
Selling digital courses you create can be profitable. You create and sell a product which solves your audience’s pain point. When you sell your own product, you keep 100 percent of the profits.

As you can see, blog ads typically pay between $5 and $25 for every 1,000 pageviews. RPM is revenue per mille or revenue for every 1,000 pageviews. A blog with 100,000 pageviews should be earning between $500 and $2,500 in ad revenue.
Increase ad revenue by joining a premium ad network and creating buyer focused content targeted towards Americans. Avoid controversial topics because advertisers want to spend money on family friendly content.
You can make money through Google Adsense. However, my personal opinion is that Adsense is not worth the small revenue and potential impact to your reputation. Premium ad networks will be looking at your reputation with Google if they are a Certified Publishing Partner.
You can also monetize your blog through affiliate marketing, selling products, and sponsored posts. However, display ads are one of the most passive forms of income a blog can earn.
