How to keep yourself busy at home

Keep yourself busy at home by finding hobbies like reading, exercising, playing video games, joining online communities. You can improve your situation through side hustles, cleaning your home, household projects, or dating your partner. Find a worthwhile cause to keep yourself occupied.

Clean your house

Everyone loves a clean house and having one can significantly improve your mood and productivity. Take some time to get organized, clear out your cluttered office, and take care of the dog hair floating around.

Keep in mind, cleaning your house will never be perfect. Your house will always get dirty again no matter how much you clean. Therefore, don’t get too wound up over having a perfectly clean house.

However, you should look for little opportunities to improve your life. Maybe you need to purchase a new filing cabinet to organize your bills, financial statements, and other important information.

Start a side hustle

Not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur and that’s ok. However, starting a side hustle is a good way to stay preoccupied if you find yourself staying at home a lot without much to do. Not to mention, you might be able to generate extra income!

Join an online community

Online communities are a good way to get in extra socialization if you’re stuck at home. You can talk to people online about similar interests you have. Reddit is one of the best online communities for people to find other people with similar hobbies.

For example, you might be into parenting. Reddit has many different subreddits where other parents ask parenting related questions.

You can also take advantage of other social media communities. For example, Facebook has different local groups you can join and discuss. Twitter may also have like minded individuals that you can follow and engage with.

Play video games

Video games are one of the best ways to keep yourself busy on a budget. Most video games provide hours of fun and don’t cost a lot of money. There are plenty of video games to choose from, making it easy for everyone to find something that they enjoy.

Personally, I like subscription based video games that you can get involved into. For example, you pay $15 per month and get access to a massive online game. I like this style of video game because it’s cheap and there are thousands of things within the game to keep you occupied.

Start a hobby

Now would be a good time to explore your interests and find a new hobby. Maybe you want to start paper crafts, volunteering, or working in your garage. The key is to find something you’re interested in and can stick with doing.

How do you find a hobby you’ll actually like doing?

The key to finding a hobby you like is to just try new things. Start with something you think you’ll be interested in and try it out. You’ll stick with the things you truly enjoy.

For example, when I was younger I thought I wanted to play guitar. I picked up a guitar, tried lessons, and self-teaching myself. However, I was always distracted by other more interesting things and decided playing guitar wasn’t for me.

Video games were my hobby during my teenage years. I could spend hours playing video games and not even realize it. It just came naturally and I enjoyed it.

Now my hobbies are building websites. I love the process of creating a website and watching it grow.

However, I tried a lot of things and found a lot of hobbies I didn’t like. I just kept on trying things until I found what I really liked.

Start a household project

Chances are there are projects around the house you’ve been putting off. Now is the perfect time to keep yourself busy by actually doing your household projects. This could be remodeling the kitchen or painting a room in your house.

This year our family was stuck at home for the Covid-19 pandemic. We decided to spend a little bit of money to make an outdoor garden. The garden kept us busy and it saved us money on buying groceries.

Exercise

Exercising is an amazing way to keep yourself busy and get in shape. You don’t need fancy equipment to work out at home. Exercising will keep your energy levels high and improve your overall mood.

Some exercise you can do include:

  • Go for a walk
  • Running
  • Bodyweight fitness
  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Free YouTube workouts

The problem most people have when working out by themselves is motivation. Chances are you know someone else that would like to get in shape as well. Ask your friend if they want to be workout partners, keeping each other accountable.

Read

Reading will help keep your mind sharp. You can find plenty of books at your local library for free! Take a portion of your day to learn something new, read an interesting story, or write your own book.

Date your partner

Being stuck at home isn’t all that bad if you have your partner with you. Now would be a good time to spend time working on your relationship. Spend time talking, play games, create a common goal to work towards, and just enjoy each other.
