Ad networks are companies which provide all the logistics behind serving ads on a website. A good ad network can also help keep your relationship with Google in good standing. Most website owners should consider ads when their website receives 10k monthly pageviews.
An ad network manages the relationship between advertisers and your blog. All the coding is provided for you, so you can focus on publishing great content. Most ad networks make their money by taking a percentage of your ad revenue.
It’s important to work with a Google Certified Publishing Partner. A Certified Publishing Partner has passed Google’s criteria for ad management. In other words, they can help you earn more money while staying compliant with all of Google’s policies.
Most publishers should consider signing up for an ad network at 10,000 pageviews per month. Typically, your earnings will be insignificant if you have less than 10k pageviews.
Most new publishers can only sign up for Google Adsense if they’re under 10k pageviews. However, Adsense pays pennies compared to other ad networks. Also, Adsense doesn’t have customer support like other ad networks.
My ad earnings practically doubled when I switched from Adsense to Ezoic. You’ll be eligible to sign up for Ezoic at around 10k sessions. I highly recommend using Ezoic when you meet the requirements.
Create an Ad Unit
You will need to create an ad unit if you want to place ads yourself with Google Adsense. Ad units specify the type and sizes of your ads and allow you to get the ad’s html code. If you are using ad placement services provided by ad networks, you might skip this step.
If you are using Google Adsense, log into your Adsense account. Go to Ads, Overview, and select By Ad Unit to create your first ad unit.
Get Ad code
In Google Adsense, you will be able to find all of your ads right below where you created your Ad Unit. Click on the “< >” to get the html code to place on your website.
Place Ad HTML code on website
Place your ad html code on your website in the locations you want to display ads. However, you need to make sure your ad placements comply with Google ad placement policy. Add the ad code to your wordpress site using trusted plugins, your side bar, in content, and other locations which meet policy.
However, the easiest thing to do is simply let your ad network place ads for you. Google Adsense recently released a feature where they will place your ads for you. Alternatively, you can let companies like Ezoic place your ads.
My personal preference is to let your ad network place ads for you. Typically, ad networks are more experienced and can earn you more money while keeping you in good standing.
New publishers often make mistakes with ad placement, which can put your account at risk. You may not even think you’re violating ad policies. To me, it’s not worth the potential loss in income to place the ads myself when a professional can do it for free.
How to increase display ad earnings
To increase your display ad earnings, increase your traffic and write advertiser friendly content. The more traffic you have, the higher your earnings. However, writing advertiser friendly content can boost your income on a per article basis.
Increase traffic
Website revenue is often measured in revenue per thousand pageviews or RPM. A site might earn a $15 RPM and get 10,000 pageviews which makes $150. Doubling your traffic, nothing else changed, would now make you $300 per month.
Focusing on increasing web traffic is a good way to increase your income. More traffic means more advertising dollars, but also increases chances of sales for your products or services.
Write advertising friendly content
Writing advertising friendly content is an important concept to grasp. Most new bloggers are writing the wrong type of content which doesn’t attract advertising dollars. Advertisers are bidding on keywords, so you need to make sure your article contains relevant keywords.
New bloggers might write an article like, “Why my dog likes snacks” which reads like a personal story. Your article talks about how often you give a dog a snack and how they always get a treat before bedtime.
No advertiser is going to pay for your personal stories which contain minimal keywords.
Instead, you should write an article like, “the best dog treats” because it has commercial intent. People who search for the best dog treats are looking to spend money on dog treats. You can always throw in some of your personal story, but it shouldn’t be the focus.
You can also use features like Ezoic’s big data analytics. Ezoic’s EPMV metric stands for earnings per thousand visitors and you can see which articles have the best EPMV.
Find out which of your articles have the highest EPMV, but also get a decent amount of traffic. Create similar content, because this content earns money and you’ve proven it gets visitors.
Additionally, you can use Google Keyword planner to find out which keywords are the most competitive for advertisers. The higher the competition, the more money advertisers will spend on those keywords.
Make sure you include some high competition keywords in your articles to increase your article’s earnings.
