Digital marketing is a broad term. You can be a pay-per-click advertiser, blogger, or Twitter user who sells courses. There are thousands of ways to make money online.

How do you want to make money online?

The first step is to decide what type of marketing you are interested in. You should then find the leaders in that specific industry and follow them for advice.

The problem is, there are hundreds of ways to solve the same problem. Some people advocate for building backlinks to your website while others say not to. You need to decide what pieces of advice you want to listen to.

Spend time testing pieces of advice and see what works for you. Personally, I heard a lot of great things about Pinterest for bloggers. I tried, but never got Pinterest to work for producing a lot of blog traffic. I have concluded personal finance does not do well on Pinterest.

Focus on what brings results. I soon discovered that search engine optimization or SEO worked amazing. Therefore, I focus all my energy into producing optimized content for search engines.

I’ll admit, I started my blog in January of 2017. It wasn’t until December of 2019 that I really figured out how to drive consistent traffic. Now my traffic increases month after month and I have learned a skill I can repeat. 

Everyone’s story is different. Some people make themselves sound like The Golden Child. You might even read stories of how people learned and profited in one to two years. Others are still struggling 5 years into their journey.

Remember to focus on your journey. Don’t compare your start with someone else’s middle.

What skills are required for digital marketing?

Patience and consistency are the skills required for digital marketing. Simply showing up day after day will set you apart from everybody else. Over time, you will learn the skills required to be proficient at digital marketing. 

We spent the first 18 years of our lives learning and finally graduating high school. Some of us will spend another four or more years in college. We have consistently shown up to learn basic skills to enter the workforce.

For some of us, we have spent 25 years being groomed for an entry level position. Why do we think we can learn a new money-making skill in an afternoon?

I am okay with the fact it took me two to three years to figure out blogging. For myself, I figured out a new money making skill in less time than it took me to graduate college. Income from a new website continually rises as the traffic increases.

Digital marketing requires patience and consistency. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but the bricks were laid every hour.

The reason my traffic increases every month is my patience and consistency. I show up every day, write new content, and hit publish. My articles are the building blocks which build my website.
