How can I work from home and be my own boss?

Determine your ideal side hustle lifestyle

The first thing you want to do is think about your ideal side hustle ‘job criteria.’ Do you want to be able to take a month off at a time? Would you rather deal with customers and have to keep meeting deadline requests?

Personally, I chose blogging as my side hustle. Blogging has the potential to be turned into a full-time income and can allow me to be a digital nomad. I can work from anywhere with an internet connection and the website works 24/7.

Blogging meets my ideal ‘retired lifestyle.’ Think about your ideal work situation if you were working for yourself.

Consistently work at your side hustle

The only way to be your own boss is to put in the work. You are not going to build a successful business overnight. Typically, you’ll have to work at building your business every day consistently for 2-5 years to retire early.

Think about doing a daily task that is going to move your business forward. Do that one task consistently for years and you’ll start seeing success.

For example, a blogger should write content consistently. Each day they should either write for 1-2 hours or meet a certain word count. Writing content is how bloggers make money, so they need to keep writing.

A client based business needs to consistently reach out to new potential clients. The more clients you get, the more income you can make. The only way you’re going to get new clients is by reaching out.

Transition to self-employment

Next, you’ll need to work on building up your side hustle to the income level you desire. To work from home full-time, you’ll need to understand your current expenses, self-employment taxes, and your business expenses.

Chances are you’ll need to earn more money at your side hustle than you did at your 9-5 job. Typically, your employer covers a portion of your health insurance benefits and half of your FICA taxes. You’ll also have expenses associated with running your business that you’ll need to cover.

You are financially independent when your gross income can cover business expenses, taxes, and living expenses. This is the minimum amount of money you need to earn to quit your job for good.

What jobs allow you to be your own boss?

The best jobs that allow you to be your own boss include product reselling and sales, blogging, freelancing, virtual assistants, and consulting. All of these jobs will allow you to earn at least a full-time income. Some jobs allow you to earn passive income while others still require you to exchange time for money.

Think of this list as just the beginning. There are plenty of ways you can make money online or offline. What job is going to make you happy, fit your side hustle schedule, and live your best life?

Product reseller

Product resellers find products at retail stores with the intention of flipping them for profit online. You might find a product on clearance that sells for double on Amazon or Ebay. Purchase the product, list it for sale online, and ship it out when it sells.

Selling on Ebay can be more of a time commitment than selling on Amazon. Amazon has the ‘fulfilment by Amazon’ program which allows you to send products to their warehouses. When the product sells, Amazon fulfillment ships the product to your customer.

Therefore, Amazon FBA might be the best choice for busy workers. Going with Amazon FBA allows you to spend the majority of your time sourcing products to resell.

However, it’s hard to ignore the profit potential of Ebay. You can find a stack of jeans at a yard sale and sell them for hundreds of dollars online.

Blogger

Blogging can be a good source of passive income which allows you to travel while earning online income. You build a website and earn money through display ads, affiliate marketing, digital courses, and sponsorships.

Someone that knows what they’re doing can build a blog to be a full-time income in 2 years. Typically, you’ll need to be able to work 10-20 hours per week to make the income a reality.

However, affiliate sales and ad income is very passive. Once your website is built, it sits on the internet and website visitors make you money passively. You could be earning between $5k and $12k in two years just from ads and affiliate sales.

Freelancer

Freelancers are constantly providing services to customers. You have to set up your freelance business, find clients, perform work, and invoice for your services. As you gain experience, you can increase your rates and make more money.

You can be a freelancer in a variety of areas. People will always need to hire writers, coders, bookkeepers, and plenty more. What are you good at that an online business would be willing to hire?

Virtual assistant

Virtual assistants run another service based business. As a virtual assistant, you provide administrative tasks for online businesses. The more specialized your skillset, the more money you can charge for your services.

For example, you can be a social media manager, answer emails, pay affiliates, etc. There are plenty of tasks that online businesses need managed, but don’t have the time for.

Finding a good virtual assistant is hard. The more value you can provide for a company the more money you can charge.

For example, a VA who manages social media can demand higher rates if you can show social media growth. You’re managing social media because it brings in good business. Your ability to grow the social media accounts is putting more money into the business’s pocket.

Affiliate marketer

Affiliate marketers are good at selling other people’s products for a commission. A skilled affiliate marketer can put a passive sales system in place which keeps generating online income. Therefore, you only have to set up a system once and keep reaping the benefits.

Most people associate affiliate marketing with blogging. However, blogging is only one way you can promote affiliate marketing offers. For example, you can set up email funnels or use social media strategically.

Online consultant

Consulting for businesses or individuals can be a good source of income with the right knowledge. The most important part of a good consulting business is that you’re able to help people achieve success.

You might be a personal trainer and nutritionist at your day job. As part of your regular work activities, you help people lose weight. However, you can do the same job online for yourself and get paid more for it.

For example, you set up your own weight loss consulting business. When someone joins as your client you have skype meetings to discuss weight loss plans, goals, and achievements. You are helping someone reach their weight loss goals, but over the internet.

Digital course creator

Digital course creation is one of the most lucrative ‘be your own boss’ jobs when done right. You create the best digital courses and work towards promoting them. The more products you sell, the more cash you can make working from home.

Let’s assume you wanted to create a product for weight loss. You make the best digital product around and sell it on your website for $40. Now, every sale you make puts $40 in your pocket!

Don’t have a website? No problem!

You can hire a virtual assistant (or do it yourself) to find other bloggers in the weight loss niche. Contact these bloggers and offer a 50% commission for all sales referred. Now, you have an army of affiliate marketers promoting your product.

Is being your own boss worth it?

Being your own boss has ups and downs. Not everyone needs to be their own boss and some people are content working their 9-5 job. However, being your own boss can help you reach financial independence and provide reliable income.

I won’t lie, being an entrepreneur is hard work. Most people are content showing up to their 9-5 job and saving for retirement. A high income earner can still retire early in 7-15 years if they are able to save the majority of their income.

However, being your own boss can speed up your retirement date. A side hustle bringing in $5k per month gives you the flexibility to invest the majority of that income if working your 9-5 concurrently.

Additionally, it’s usually a bad idea to rely on one source of income. Your 9-5 job isn’t as secure as you might think.

Having a side hustle can be a good hedge against a job loss or layoff. A side hustle can give you the money you need to live without dipping into your savings.
